I know somewhere there was a post about this, but I couldn't find it.
Just curious on what others think of how long this might go on. People at my job (non government job) are starting to panic. They think that people are starving already. They also feel that if SNAP assistance doesn't come out, there will pandemonium. I think most of them watch too much t.v. How long do you think the shut down will have to go on before things escalate ?

Here is one aspect that I didn't think about happening.

The federal government shutdown, now in its third week, has forced the Food and Drug Administration to suspend a large portion of its food safety inspections.

Safety inspections of imported food have continued at their normal pace, according to FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb. Domestic inspections, of which the organization does about 160 per week, have slowed with about 41 percent of the organization's 17,000 employees on furlough.

The FDA did not conduct inspections during the two weeks around the Christmas and New Year holidays, so this is the first week that some inspections would be postponed, he said.

Gottlieb said the FDA is working to continue inspecting "high risk" inventory including seafood, cheese and infant formula, which make up about 31 percent of all domestic inspections.

"This is a departure from practices during past shutdowns, and part of our continuing effort at FDA to focus our resources on areas of highest potential risk to consumers during the shutdown," Gottlieb wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.

During the 2013 shutdown, which lasted 16 days, all domestic inspections were stopped. The current shutdown has lasted 20 days.

"We've taken a different posture based on sound public health and legal rationale," Gottlieb wrote.

The biggest concern from advocacy groups is that the longer the FDA is unable to do its regular inspections, the greater the risk of a food safety incident.

"Foodborne illness can happen with any kind of food," Sarah Sorscher, deputy director of regulatory affairs at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, told CNBC.

She said items such as peanut butter and flour, which are not typically designated as high risk, have become contaminated in the past.

"It's bad news for consumers," Thomas Gremillion, director of food policy at the Consumer Federation of America, told CNBC via email. "FDA inspections help to flag issues like listeria contamination and rodent infestations that prevent foodborne illness outbreaks."

Another issue could arise if the FDA does flag a food safety problem: Some of their laboratories may not be fully staffed, leading to response delays.

Not to mention, the FDA may have trouble getting furloughed workers to return without the promise of a paycheck. The majority of food inspectors do not make a sizable income. In fact, they often make less than $40,000 a year, meaning they are often living paycheck to paycheck and may need to subsidize their income during the shutdown in order to pay for rent and other bills.

The slowdown in inspections does not appear to be affecting restaurant chains. Domino's, Chipotle Mexican Grill and Yum Brands told CNBC that, so far, it has not seen any impact.

Wendy's said it conducts its own internal audits that exceed FDA requirements and is not aware of any disruptions in its supply chain.

Grocery stores have their own audits too to make sure they up to FDA standards on a regular basis. I think the majority of illness will be coming in from the fields and if not tested, passed on to consumer. I would think factories that package would be up to standards and have a regular audit in place. Not like any restaurant or grocery stores can test a for Ebola or listeria. As pointed out already by Urban, just another reason to grow your own or already have stock in place until the shutdown is lifted.

shut down,,,,there is a shut down going on,,,,,hmmmmmm,,,,,I have not seen any change in things in my area,,,I don't think we need any of the things shut down right now,,,,why do you think the feds allowed them to shut down,,,it is all the deadwood,,,all add on crap to suck up tax money

Yawn, not much I can do about it, one of many events out of my control so worrying about it does nothing. Today for me is no different than the same time last year. The people that are worrying about the shutdown are the one relying on the Government for their needs which should be more of a concern to them than the shutdown.

I have no problem paying people (later) who are working but considered 'essential' so they must work but aren't getting paid yet. I do have a problem paying people who are staying home & watching TV. It sucks that they didn't have a say in this situation. I think gov't should have given everyone a choice: stay and possible (probably) get paid later (days/weeks/months). Or don't come to work, but don't expect to get paid.

Meanwhile, all of congress & their staff should get $0 paychecks. And keep getting nothing until they do their jobs and pass a budget. No backpay later. This will motivate them to do their jobs in the future on time.

I completely agree that none of the politicians should be getting paid either, and let’s close all their gyms and other perks while we’re at it!

Yeah, why isn't Congress's budget part of the shutdown?

I do feel for the people that just want to do their jobs and live their lives. Not paying people for their work is not a good way for our politicians to perform their duties.
They will be getting back pay. The "non essential" employees that aren't working are just on a long vacation. They'll be getting back pay too.

I don't mind paying people who've been working. But for all the vacationers? Sorry. All the shows are talking about the poor people who aren't getting their paycheck. They've had at least 2 weeks notice if not a month that this was coming & should have planned accordingly. Every job has it's risk.

I agree, and if was up to me I wouldn't even bring them back. We're getting by just fine without them.

The government is just like any big inefficient corporation. The CEO want more presidents. The presidents want more vice presidents. The VP's want more directors. The directors want more managers below them. The Managers want more supervisors below them. The supervisors want more personnel below them. The reason why, the more you manage, the more you are worth and it also provides nice scape goats when it hits the fan. Yes we could certainly cut down on the number government employee's. I would like to see people get rewarded for doing more with less, that is a prime employee.

With you 100% on this.
