most people these days couldn't cook a meal from fresh even if you gave them the ingredients free of charge.
most people just throw something in a microwave for 2 or 3 minutes and that's what they call "cooking".
So true. Because of that, I have taken it upon myself to include cooking lessons for our church's youth group. My wife is the leader & my job is to assist... especially in food prep & cleanup. Once I saw how ignorant they all were when it came to food prep, I switched to where I would demonstrate cooking some meals & introducing them to foods they are not familiar with. Last night I brought out the panini press and let them assist in making their own sandwiches. Most had no idea what a panini was. I also picked some fresh basil from the garden and demonstrated making pesto, which we used on some sandwiches. Of course, most didn't know what pesto was. I'm trying to show them cooking fresh food does not have to be complicated. I don't measure anything, which is my normal way of cooking, so that they don't get all worried & bothered about recipes. Shrimp scampi was a hit a couple of weeks ago and they all assisted in the prep & cooking. For that meal I picked orange bell peppers from the garden & demonstrated making a vinaigrette for the salad.

I'm really worried about the youth of today. Seems mostly no one is teaching them anything useful... be it cooking, hunting or getting out in nature. What happened to parenting?

most parents are too busy trying to earn a living they leave it to the school or the childminder, I have heard of kids starting school who don't know how to use a knife and fork- they mostly eat with their fingers, nor can they hold a pen or pencil properly, not that they can read or write either, my mother made sure I could read and write by the time I was 5 but then she was a stay at home mum.

No doubt, most parents are so busy earning a living they don’t spend much time on their kids. I had a friend once point out how many people get a second job to pay for all the time saving appliances they have like a dishwasher and microwave.
My apples all have spots. When I eat them I just cut out the bad spot. Many would say that’s gross but I feel eating chemicals and pesticides is gross. I read where spraying liquid copper is good for apples, yet it will kill the earthworms around the trees. Why would I eat something that is able to kill the worms in the ground? Common sense folks.

And what is your point, says the King of Microwave? LOL

About the only apple I can grow that might not have spots is Arkansas Black, but even then the coloring is not uniform and I doubt anyone would buy it at the store. Most bad spots in a natural apple don't impact the whole apple so if it is not too big, I've found it actually enhances the flavor of the apple. It seems to cause the apple to ripen sooner. Many a time, I've taken folks into the orchard, pulled an apple with say black rot the size of a quarter on one side, and let them taste the other half of the apple. They expect it taste rotten or off... but are surprised it is juicy, crisp & sweet.

This past weekend I brought a local college student from Nigeria into the orchard & when tasting different apples off the trees, he commented that they didn't look like "normal" apples from the store. Some were misshapen, some had scab lesions and many had sooty blotch and flyspeck. He almost refused to eat one, thinking it was yucky or harmful. Made me laugh. The beautiful apples he is accustomed to eating are laced with all sorts of pesticides & and had been sprayed in a constant bath of fungicides. Those he will gladly eat and not wonder why his future kids will have 3 eyes, half a nose & suffer from ADHD.

If we're going to feed the world's population then modern agribusiness must use all the tools available to continue increasing production. That includes GM seeds, herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers and growth hormones. Plus they use the inferior products they can't sell to make the processed foods from.
Personally I don't care about feeding the world, just my family.
I don't buy this crap either that people are too busy making a living that they don't have time to prepare a decent meal. If they would turn the TV and computer off they would find that they have plenty of time to spend with their family.
