Listened to a short radio talk on electric vehicles and still wonder why so many are fooled into thinking they will save the environment....with a 220 charger it takes 8 hours for a full charge, the average cost to recharge is $20....If you have to plug it in very night that will be expensive, with a less than 250 mile range the electric companies will be enjoying the large profits, and where will all the extra energy come from to create the extra electricity ? I wonder how millions of tons of natural resources it will take to build all those batteries ? easy on the environment ? and you won't be able to take it anywhere without knowing exactly where you would be able to charge it, tow bills anyone....with the higher cost of electric vehicles come higher insurance and probably higher repair/maintenance costs...will the batteries last the life of the vehicle ? how much will a new set of batteries cost ? I will guess a new gas engine will be cheaper to replace than batteries will be in a electric car or the electric motor....after 2-3 years resale value I would bet will be very low.....every time I see an article about electric vehicles and how great they are there is so much not being said.....vent session over....

They are calling 2018 "The year of the electric car."

No matter how ridiculous they are, the car companies are going to build them next year in ever increasing numbers and people will buy them, and we the taxpayers will pay a big chunk of the cost.

Eliminate the tax incentives, and then let's see how well they fare!

I think everyone who is against oil and gas (the most reliable energy source ever) should put their own money where their mouth is and buy an electric coffin, I mean car. Cut out all tax subsidies to electric car manufacturers and have the car buyer pay the full cost of the car. The tax payer should not be forced to cover any of the cost.

That would make too much sense...

Not to mention they are far from green. With today's battery technology far behind the tech of everything else, we're looking at super harmful chemicals from all of these dead batteries.

In a post shtf world, forget it. Even if you had a solar powered charger capable enough, eventually, the batteries are going to go bad (faster than they would in a gas or diesel, of course).

The man who invents an actual workable battery, with an abundance of raw material available to make, a fast charge time, and the ability to be recharged over and over many, many times, will rule the world.

(well, be vanished from the face of the earth, then the corporation that ordered the hit would rule the world, but you know what I mean....)

Is it not amazing after all these years that batteries are still built like they are, where is the Technology ? is it out there and being stifled because of oil ? either way I don't see how electric vehicles will ever be cost conscious.....

Maybe if the electric car were equipped with the A-10 cockpit and the car was built around the GAU-8/A I might consider the electric car for daily use.

There would be a whole town of destroyed vehicles in my town if I had one of those......every idiot drive......Brrrrrrrtttttttttt.......

Your points are well made. The bottom line is the liberal forces of the world control the media so intelligent thought is not likely to be published. I have thought about the use of electric motors for around the homestead - perhaps an electric quadrunner, tractor etc. Because they have fewer moving parts and are easier to repair. Also electricity in the small amounts needed can be generated by wind, sun, natural gas, gasoline, diesel, wood - whatever you have handy. I dont have huge requirements of these vehicles, just moving stuff around, but it doesnt make sense to expect to trapse around the county (or state or country) in an electric vehicle right now. High torque with long duration still requires dino juice for doing serious work.

It's really just a simple matter of resources though. We simply don't have enough lithium or cobalt (or other rare metals) to do it without some kind of major tech advancement. No amount of altruism, or money thrown at the problem will solve it.

The funnier part, is that the environmental impact of mining these materials, could be far worse than the impact of continued use of fossil fuels!

Here's even more fun....what happens when your electric car needs to be fixed? Can't just take it to any auto shop...oh no sir.... You are going to get screwed by the dealer...hard...

Pretty sure an electric truck isn't going to pull a 3 horse trailer, or a semi trailer....

Again though, the big problem with it, there simply won't be enough stuff to make the batteries!

I suppose electric cars are here to stay, and maybe they will be useful in urban areas, strictly as a grocery getter. Sort of a really expensive impossible to repair Ford Fiesta. As long as they don't start banning fossil fuel powered cars, or making us pay some sort of extra extra, extra tax to drive our cars and trucks.

I'm sorry you guys seem so down on electric cars.

I would absolutely love to see electric cars and trucks (practical ones, of course) become so common that we can tell the middle eastern countries where they can stick their oil.

They use oil profits to finance terrorism, they use oil profits to spread hateful ideology, to build nukes, and so on.

So, if we can do without oil...we can tell them to go f--k themselves.

At least that's how I see it.

My friends brother has an electric car. One day his 11 year old daughter left with a group to go to campsite about 2.5 hours away from where we live. She forgot something so he was going to go and drive out to the site, in his electric car, and give it to her. He was running low on charge, out in the middle of nowhere, he came to a convenience store and asked if he could charge his car. The clerk said, no. He continued to drive and found a farm house. He drove up to the farm and asked the guy if he could charge. The guy was nice enough and told him, yes. After a while, the farmer left to go run an errand. Ted finished his charge and tried to leave the farmer's property, but his car got stuck in the mud. He had to wait for the farmer to return to pull him out of the mud. I was cracking up laughing when my friend told me this story. I bet that farmer was shaking his head. :)
