nice, just when I begun to "learn the compass again" ;)

just wondering how this will impact my mortar jockey duties....

lol, unless the declination is moving faster than 1 meter per minute probably not much impact, although the compass can get a little tricky, hopefully the map is updated and the declination is adjusted correctly.

The only time I used GPS was when I was scouting out property. I used Google Earth and it did save my a lot of drive time, eliminating unsuitable property.
We drive a lot with our business and google maps is an absolute must for us. When there’s a wreck, or traffic is heavier than normal it will redirect you around it. One time it told me to turn in behind a plaza, not a road, but actually go around behind it. I thought it must be a mistake so ingored it and went to the intersection. The traffic mess cost me twenty minutes. Now I trust her. Not only does she give great directions but she even whispers in my ear (Bluetooth sincs with my hearing aids) and tells me what to do.....

Just passin through and will leave a thought. IF the Poles flip so the North pole is replaced by the South pole does that mean North Dakota and North Carolina become South Dakota and South Carolina, and South Dakota and South Carolina become North Dakota and North Carolina?? Does South America become North America and ViceVersa. Will Americans start migrating south, Will we start chanting " The North shall rise again" Will Northerners suddenly start talking slower and become polite? Toodles :)

Hah and as the pole swap takes hundreds of years at some point North and South Dakota / Carolina will be East and West Carolina and Dakota, :)

Made me laugh SE! All I’m sure of is I couldn’t imagine going back to paper maps at this point. We cover an area of about two hundred miles from our shop, in all directions. I would have paid google ten times more for the service! Which just so happens to be free by the way.

I've heard different opinions on this - that it's TEOTWAWKI and that it's normal/no big deal/nothing to worry about. I can see that it would make traditional compass navigation quite a bit more difficult. Since GPS is by satellites I don't think it would be affected.

Satellites can be re-calibrated, navigating by compass/map one just needs to know the declination for the area and adjust. in a TEOTWAWKI event both can be a problem, just determine the known speed of the declination change one can adjust it themselves though crude and not as accurate, it would get one closes enough, most satellites are re-calibrated every 5 years, maps are updated every 5 years, I think maritime navigational charts are updated every 2 years to reflect declination changes. NOAA has a web site that reflects current declination changes but the web site is down do to the government shutdown; http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geomag-web/

This gives an short example of declination about a quarter way down the page; http://doomsdayprepperforums.com/index.php?threads/navigation-the-compass-and-map.6202/
