State inspectors had given the dam a “fair” rating less than a year earlier. Until it failed, it looked little different from thousands of others across the U.S. — and that could portend a problem.

A more than two-year investigation by The Associated Press has found scores of dams nationwide in even worse condition, and in equally dangerous locations. They loom over homes, businesses, highways or entire communities that could face life-threatening floods if the dams don’t hold.

A review of federal data and reports obtained under state open records laws identified 1,688 high-hazard dams rated in poor or unsatisfactory condition as of last year in 44 states and Puerto Rico. The actual number is almost certainly higher: Some states declined to provide condition ratings for their dams, claiming exemptions to public record requests. Others simply haven’t rated all their dams due to lack of funding, staffing or authority to do so.

Neglected dams across the US
Thousands of people in the U.S. may be at risk from dams that are rated in poor or unsatisfactory condition. An AP analysis found 1,688 dams in these conditions are high hazard, meaning their failure can cause human death.

Unfortunately most of the infrastructure in the country is in bad shape, from bridges to rail lines. The politicians have squandered 20+ trillion on what? We are in for some rough times when the economy does collapse. I feel for our children.

Sorry but in my experience it is a typical male thing. . . don't fix it unless its broke. That is definitely how most politicians think, so they can spend the money on what they think is important. I really think that Trump came into a hell hole where so many things needs fixed. . . My hunny made a road trip to take things down the road to #3's son house. . . he blew a tire on the way back home. I realize that we took on a lot of extra expense when we took on Granny with the remodel and her expenses that needed cleared up, but really? At least he had a spare.

This will be viewed as great news for a lot of people. The green weenies will use this information to support their goal of removing dams, major construction companies will view this as another golden goose (similar to replacing all bridges across the country), government will love the additional tax money that they can get their hands on, politicians will use this information so they can brag about all the jobs and tax revenue that they'll bring in to local communities.

I personally cannot understand why anyone would live below a dam. I'd feel like I was living beneath the "Sword of Damocles"

After Hurricane Harvey a couple years ago, they had to open up a dam to keep it from bursting and flooding a huge area. Of course, opening it flooded a small area, which happened to contain a neighborhood. Some people actually died from this, apparently, and people got mad.

Trump been talking to the Dems on the $2T investment in the infrastructure, they been working on a way to pay for it. One can be assured the Republicans don't want to commit to this very large amount of money before election year, the dems on the other hand don't want to give Trump a victory before election year even though all sides agree it needs to be done.

We also got to remember Congress holds the power of the purse not the President. I can see the dems adding to the bill such as healthcare, minimum wage and a bunch of other pork projects not associated with the infrastructure forcing the President to veto the bill.

You are so right! I wish they would what’s right for the country.
