Maverick, what kind of range can you get with these radios? I did a very quick search and did not find much for details. They look very similar to the radios we used when I was a correction officer. I don't think we got much range with the handheld models but the transport van radio we could get some distance. Found that out when we all had to do an emergency pee. Had to do a radio check for any local law enforcement and a county answered (forget who). Never saw the look of relief on a prisoner like that before(or my partner and I).

Just curious, for the price comparison why haven't you gone to ham? Is it the studying for the test, the test itself and the cost associated? Plus looking at the radios and some of them look like you need to go thru a training session to learn how to operate them. These are some of my reasons?

I get about 3.5-5 miles with vHf, the uHf does better in the heavy canvas areas when back into the trees. The radios are built like a tank. Never really had no desire going ham, it was never a priority.

I was in a diff site where diff types of communications was mentioned.in which it reminded me of a movie called code talker.in which it's a great movie. Code talker is aboiut some navaho sholders would send coded messages over the radio.untill the message got back to the decoding room.where it'd get decoded.handed over someone. That someone would take it to who ever.in the end.who ever sent the coded message to begin with.got the help they needed.this will come in handy if the family/group knows a language not known in their area.
