Having a way to cut the seatbelt, like a multi tool on your belt, could save your life. Also those spring loaded tools to shatter the window, especially if in water, is essential. I always have the multi tool on my side, the window tool lives in the glovebox, next to a pepper spray (non lethal deterrent) and a 9mm (more persuasive).
It really surprises me how few people have an emergency kit in their car, and especially ones in harsh winter areas. The only thing I really need to add is water. I have a small filter, but no ready to drink water.

If you have an ace hardware near you they have an all metal one with a heavy spring. If you're in a pinch, any sharp pointed metal object can work. If hitting it doesn't work, use a hammer or rock to help the metal point out.
