As far as the overpopulation goes, I think China was on the right track with the one child policy...Forced sterilization after one child would make for a lot less suffering.
Imagine a world in which nobody has any brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces or cousins.

A world in which girls are aborted since boys are more productive.

A world in which children have emotional and developmental problems from only having adults to play with.

A world in which children have families consisting of two parents, four grandparents, and maybe a few great grandparents.

A world in which children are pampered to the point that they grow up to be "Little Emperors" that are over-indulged, lack self-discipline and have no adaptive capabilities: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Emperor_Syndrome

A world in which babies that don't meet parents' expectations are euthanized so they can try again.

After creating such a world, China realized their mistake and abandoned their "One Child Policy"

I can also imagine a world where no one starves to death. The continent of Africa is already seeing millions suffer, but even here in the US there are issues. There is no easy solution, but our population has grown unchecked for far too long. With the world nearing I believe 7billion, we are already past the reasonably sustainable number of people. With the numbers this high we are exponentially increasing each year. There comes a point where something has got to change.

You've mentioned China & Africa. Like it or not, China has avoided any significant starvation with their policies. Africa has no industry, AIDS is rampant. And crops are difficult to grow there. Africa has lots of natural resources as their only hope, but war prevents effective solutions. I suppose right now the only plan is to let them keep killing each other, sad.

But not mentioned is India. Massive population, lots of children. At some point India is going to be a massive humanitarian problem. And the nation is doing nothing to prevent this.

slightly...
somehow I have a FEELING we'll feel alot more quakes in the near future...
