In our case (East Coast) seems to be helping. We haven't had a single Hurricane scare all season.

Think I will avoid the US this winter, esp the west coast, methinks you chaps need a prep kit and planning review for this fall onwards

Yeah, but other than a lot of rain for us on the East Coast (the Southeast at least), it's actually kept nasty storms from forming in the Atlantic or the Gulf of Mexico. So much so that I'm putting off a generator purchase until next year instead. (unless some really good sales at the end of this season).

Ya but El Nino is also known to be unpredictable like in the late 80s here bringing very little rain unlike the early 80s and 97, both events in the 80s, Florida still had hurricanes and in 1997 the east coast including Florida was affected by hurricanes and tropical storms, I'm not sure if I would hold off on a generator given the unpredictability?

Nobody has ever been able to reliably predict long range weather, and limited success with short range. I guess the old saying "if you want to know what the weather is today, wait till tomorrow" is the most accurate. There are a lot of high paid "experts" that are wrong more often than not.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The January figures are in, and Earth's string of hottest-months-on-record has now reached nine in a row. But NASA said January stood out: The temperature was above normal by the highest margin of any month on record.

And January set another record: Arctic sea ice reached its lowest point for that ice-building winter month.

NASA said January 2016 was 2.03 degrees Fahrenheit (1.13 degrees Celsius) above normal. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which calculates temperatures differently, said last month was 1.87 degrees (1.04 degrees Celsius), which is the second biggest margin in history. NOAA said the greatest was this past December.

January's average global temperature was a record 55.5 degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Celsius), easily beating the old January record set in 2007, according to NOAA. Records go back to 1880.
