That's why I'd head north back to Alaska and find a remote island. There are thousands of islands to choose from. Not much danger of being over run there.

Just a harsh climate to try and survive in. And I get the appeal, I lived in Kodiak, Alaska as a kid...but to survive there post SHTF? No thanks....

I'd rather be in a colder climate post SHTF than a hot humid bug infested tropical island that has more chance of being overrun by unfriendly natives. There are no poisonous bugs or snakes in Alaska, seafood and game is abundant and it's much easier to keep food fresher longer as many islands also have glaciers, which make great ice boxes. I'm glad that most of the world's population live in more temperate areas, less competition.

Agreed, might be ok in the summer but winters are just too harsh. We're not talking just uncomfortable cold but life and death cold. Artic pointed out the abundance of resources and lack of population, but that's due to it being so hard to live there!

That's the big misconception about Alaska. Many areas along the coast are quite mild, especially SE Alaska. In a post SHTF world where modern medicine may not be available, I'd gladly take a cooler winter over a hot humid area that has a much higher risk of disease and infection.

I've been watching a couple of programmes one called "build Alaska" and "Mountain Men", a lot of Alaska is just outside the Artic Circle, and much further north than any northern part of the UK. it might deter most people from going there but it could well be dangerous to life its so cold, my wife wouldn't even go and live in Southern Canada never mind Alaska!!

Very true on the infection thing. Even bacteria don't like the cold. The beauty of both Western Canada and Alaska is undeniable, and in theory it would make a great place to be in shtf. Maybe if I was younger and had more energy to chop wood....

i'm not too concerned about disease and infection, not in my location, my main area of concern is other people and what they will do post SHTF, i'm in a relatively low population area compared with most of the rest of the UK but I would like to move about 20 miles north east of my present location to an even more isolated area.

Yeah, kind of wish I was out further too. Eleven years ago when I built this place there weren't many houses here. Now there's more houses than wooded lots.

yes originally there were only 12 houses in my immediate location, that was up to the 70s, then more were built, in about 3 phases I think, the house I live in was built in the mid 90s.

Fair enough. Kodiak wasn't bad at all, really temp wise, most of the year. Really nice summer and spring, as I recall. But then, this is an island more to the south, than the mainland.
