It's a whole different life changing experience, once the whole house is setup on low voltage and gas, a person needs to retrain their mind since everything becomes on demand only and operationally time limited (no leaving the lights on, entertainment systems limited to a couple of hours a day, two minute showers etc..) than the cost of maintenance. A 5kw inverter isn't cheap roughly $2k (American made) and add the cost of batteries that may need replacing every 5 to 8 years.

I think for the mean time I'll stick with my 10kw propane generators for when the house power goes down since I already have the bulk propane tanks, the generators burn about 1lb an hour at 50% load but since I'm really using them for frig/freezer and well pumps the generator only needs to run 2hrs a day, only opening the frig/freezers when the generator is running, the well pump is only running to fill the holding tank so the generator won't even be running at 50%. the frig in the shop I would switch it over to gas. We have on demand water heaters for the bathroom and kitchen, 2 minute showers (total water run time) is the rule (except for the Wife) we don't go through a lot of propane, two 500gal propane tanks will last a couple of years if need be, our stove is gas though a good part of our cooking is by wood stove or outside pit. For those reasons I just don't see the benefits of going all out low voltage/solar setup given the additional expense, I do have solar battery maintainers for all the equipment and vehicles plus some goal zero charging equipment for communications and rechargeable batteries.

I also thought about putting an inverter in before connecting to your existing panel box. It wouldn't take much to run lights and a tv/computer. Every time you convert electricity, it looses a little, but for low consumption things it wouldn't matter. Couple this with a DC fridge and you could have a fairly simple set up without major costs. Still needing the batteries and charging system though.

with DC the greatest loss occurs in long cable runs

Perhaps using your existing light sockets in the house

you know that your a prepper when you see a good rain cloud moving in.and then make sure everything is up to par,if the power should go out....

and yes,we have a rain cloud moving in.and im making sure everything is up to par,and ready.just in case the power does go out..

We need a rain clous. 4 weeks without rain. We have an 84% chance of rain today and NOTHING
We went so many weeks without rain I lost count. Then we got one decent rain, and it's weeks since again. I had to water the greenhouse today with city water for the first time in ages. I think we had a 20% chance today, but it's sunny, hot and dry. I'm not worried yet, but it's starting to get really dry.

You guys honestly dont know how strange those comment are to me, last drought of note over here was in 1976.

We went 3-1/2 month's with only .5" of rain. We're getting some rain now 1.5" for October so far and a couple days ago we had a little snow. Perfect hunting weather.
It may be dry but it's windy and cool for the first time. Yesterday was hot enough to start sweating in minutes. I'm looking fowards to being outside for a change.

what do you mean when you say "short term power outages"?? a few hours, maybe a couple of days? piece of p#ss, the electric supply in some parts of the UK is so antiquated this is a regular occurrence. look what happened in London the other evening, power was off for 4 hours, some thought it was the end of the world.
as a prepper I just sit back and laugh at them all, 4 hours pah!!! we'd just have an early night and see what the morning brings.:p

short term outages for me.last anywhere from a few seconds,to a few days..

i do find those kind of people to be amusing..but yet, they can be irritating at times,at the same time..
some thought it was the end of the world.

being without power sucks,,,a number of year's ago we had a ice storm, the phones, power and internet were down thousands of power poles were down,,the roads were terrible we were stranded at the house for almost 2 weeks,I heat with wood and was able to also cook on top of the old stove,I was lucky the phone was back in 2 or 3 days and the power was only out for 6 days,I found out there were people without power near me for a full month,it was brutally cold I don't know how some of them survived,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I have grown soft and hope it never happens again
