Hey all, I've been getting my bag back into shape after a recent outing, and I realized something I could use in my area. A good little fishing kit. I'm on the Illinois river, and a fishing kit is essential in any shtf scenario in this area. Any ideas on the best gear for this? I've been thinking a telescopic rod and ultra lite reel combo with minimal tackle

Does anyone have any experience fishing without a pole, using just the line and hooks/lures? I've seen it done once on TV but the guy didn't really talk about it. A YouTube search for "fishing without a pole" returns a lot of easy-to-make nets, but not "fishing by hand" like I want to learn.

well,if you have hook, sink and flote it's fairly nice :) , fishing without flote gives you more of the bottom dwellers

Fishing with gear from a survival kit would be as simple as tossing it out there and waiting . I would recomend making your own kit so you have good line and multiple size quality hooks and add a couple of small lures incase you cant find bait . Use intrals from anything caught as bait to catch more even have enough line to make several poles or lines . If possible cut you a pole from a limb or small tree . jontte the Finns have blessed the fishing world . The original RAPALA balsm wood silver with black back . I cannot remember how many trophy game fish I have cought on these .

it's amazing how good that lure is no matter where you fish,I have really, really old one in my tackle box,it's there but I don't use it,it's my goodluck charm, not that any fisherman is superstitious,we're not are we?? ;)

Nothing wrong with a small survival fishing kit I have 2 survival knives that I tossed the kits that came with them and added good line multi size hooks and couple of small jigs . I'm going to make up some bigger kits for my back packs and but packs on my LBE sets .

I concur with Psalm ... Another important thing is, know the environment.

Go to the places that you're gonna be fishing in and try regular fishing there. For e.g. my area, we use chicken meat to fish. so in a SHTF scenario, I will prolly catch pigeons and doves for bait :) and what we call hand line (i.e. rolls of fishing line with hook and sinker) is what we could use to catch them.

Learn to fish, not just building the kit. You will realise what you need in your kit when you've fished enough

thats your environment :) which is good to know.

Here? i've seen people fish with bread. Heard my neigbhours in Malaysia fish with apples. I saw a few youtube videos using corn from a can ...

know your environment :)

I once tried bits of prawns,no luck that time other than a great day outdoors, but don't forget tose prawns in that little jar in your tacklebox, the smell ain't good ;)

depending where your at on the river, you can use the yo yo, I use three barbed triples per line, I have 3 yo yo's in my bag, very cheap but effective, not for fast moving water!

just like night crawlers.aka earthworms...Catawba worms make a great fish bait. They grow to a length of about 5 cm (2.0 in) and feed on the leaves of the NorthernCatalpaand, more commonly, the Southern Catalpa, also known as Catawbaor Indian Bean trees. They are highly desired by fishermen as bait. Southern dialective fishermen's nomenclature is commonly "BatalkieWorms."

My son and I drove twenty five miles to go fishing way out in the middle of nowhere. When we got there we realized he forgot my pole (as he keeps all our fishing gear). So after a five mile hike through rough terrain, up over a huge waterfall, we finally get to this place he scoped out on a map somewhere. It's the headwaters of the chattachoochie, and is really pristine. Anyways, here we are, him with a 700.00 fly rod (yes he's a pretentious shit) and me with a stick and some line. I caught more brook trout than he did that day. As they say, size dosent matter, it's how you wiggle your worm.
