I typically point to what happened during Hurricane Katrina. It's a perfect example of how the right circumstances can easily revert people to anarchy, looting, etc, and the absence of law. It's easy to forget, as here, we haven't seen a major storm in years (which is odd enough), but that certainly could be our cities as well.
The only certainty in life is that things will change. We all tend to get complacent with our everyday life, and just expect everything to be alright. Katrina is a perfect example of how quickly our society with all its rules can break down. That was just one city/area that was affected, and look how long it took the govt to even start reacting. Just think how bad it would get with a national or even regional disaster.

I'm fortunate in that my wife is completely on board, even to the point that no matter what (potentially) off the wall thing I say we need to have or need to do, she 'almost always' says Do It!

Yes, I still get the 'side eye' from time to time :)

Yeah, me too....sometimes. Like, with the night vision device. ;)

well, mom is interested in getting some wise emergency foods.she saw their commercial on tv yesterday when it comes to a deal they have going.and here's what they have going on..

Wise isn't bad and not really a bad deal Jim, though that's per person and you would need two of them for you and your Ma, also in reality that 112 servings is really 56 servings. Always divide the serving recommendation and that goes with any of these companies be it Augason Farms, Mountain House and Wise Foods... I hate being hungry after eating ;) Never the less that would be a good starter kit for y'all!

On our Augason Farms kit we paid $400 per 30-days for two, it will require 55-gal of water per 30 days just for the freeze dried food so keep the water requirement in the back of your mind. Sounds like your Mom is getting on-board :)

yeah,so true about the serving sizes..now try explaining that to my mom..LOL..but yet,in it's own way.thats no big deal, when it comes to her.on account, she's a small eater.i've seen 3 year old's eat more then her.lol
