got a tip from my ex...they lit up a barbeque pit and tried that magnesium rod,as for tinder she took a tampoon, riped it to shreads and voila' took of nicely, have a couple of those in my tinder box now also

ive used the magnesium striker fire flint but never a flint and steel witch is the best all around is there anyone who could indulge on the subject
magnesium or a ferrocerium rod are gonna be your best spark fire options because of there high temperature they burn hot and longer! a flint and steel are gonna require a very dry and combustible material or tender to make fire like char cloth or something with a petrolium product or type of fuel ! and if your surroundings are wet from rain or what not a flint fire will be nearly impossible! as were the ferro rod or magnesium could be used in a damper situation!

If given a either flint and steel or magnesium striker, I would go with the magnesium simple because I always carry some form of steel on me (knife) so if I could not get the magnesium to work, I would try to find some flint either from a rock, or an old discarded bic lighter. I would shave the magnesium as a fuel source to light some tinder.

magnesium doesn't last as long as flint and steel in that respect always have both ;) flint and steel have served the millenniums quite good.

I know lint from dryer and Vaseline rubbed in it works. I have magnesium bar, matches, lighters, small butane- for when all else fails and I can't get fire going. Lent from dyer and some cut up dry cloth, and a fire striker.
