Back on track, another tactic I neglected to mention, another thread convo reminded me....

Post SHTF, go around and take down ALL road signs! You know the area, but others may have maps. No sense helping would be attackers!

I also liked the idea of removable cow grates to restrict vehicle access.

Good idea, I would have never thought of that. Any organized gang would be smart enough to procure maps and go on raids searching for supplies.

have been looking at cattle grids this morning, most seem to be the "drop in" variety -just stays in place due to its weight, but I know of one that is bolted in but that's seems to be about the limit of fixings.

All cattle grids I've seen have been drop in. You should be able to lift one out with a suitable lever and a vehicle I would think.

plenty of ways to rig it so it could be locked down though, especially if this was considered when putting in the grate rest. For example, a concrete resting for it, that also included bolts with chains that could be used to lock down. (bolts mounted in the concrete, below the grate).

Of course, the whole point is to REMOVE the grate when SHTF, and only put it in place when YOU want to leave. So really, no lock needed, as post SHTF, you wouldn't have it there until using it.

most of the ones I see are just dropped into place and stay in place due to their sheer weight, I saw one that had obvious bolts in it so would need a spanner or socket set for that one.

What about setting up a few well placed booby traps. Dig a hole 3' down X 5' diameter. Then place spikes in the floor. Or using large rubber bands you can have a pair of pokes on either side of the mouth of the hole that slide together piercing whatever fell in.

I love the fence ideas and wires on the ground (tangle your enemies). The traps would be a added security measure.

You can even run a shallow trench 2' wide X 12" deep and as long as you want with spikes in the floor. Injure your foot or legs and your practicality screwed.

Remember the VC its what you put on the spikes that make them more efective .

Here in the pacific northwest, we have certain mushrooms mixed with the oils from the hemlock bush that would cause a whole lot of issues from even a scrape, doesn't take much time to mix up a batch

Your thoughts on this idea.
Mash up stinging nettle, coating the spikes or plant the nettle with the spikes?

Or just plant the nettle in the trench line. That stuff alone is irritating hahaha.

I would just plant the nettles in the trench, if you can get them get the african thorn bush (white thorn) out of the savanna's, these have been use for centuries to keep tigers, lions and elephants out of villages, these are about as nasty as you can get!

I'm thinking a shallow but wide hidden trench, with lots of boards with 10 penny nails sticking up, would really suck for an invader. Kind of hard to do a raid when you can't even walk on your feet anymore, without intense pain. would sure make me go pick another, easier target.

Rose thorns are pretty good. Not only do they hurt, but the snag clothing so bad, that unless they are hacking the bush down, will really tick someone off, and waste time either way. What we use under our windows (plus they are pretty, and can be used medicinally).

Just thinking about the cattle grid again, if it's hinged on one side it can be raised against solid stoppers to form a serious barricade that would stop most vehicles.

That's actually a pretty nice idea. Especially if it still had the trench in front from the grid being up. Vehicle would lose momentum right before a ram attempt.
