how the hell do you go hiking in a tank-top? you fall it hurts just more.
she was lucky your S&R team got her out in time, people usually think well it's only some nettles

Lot of people here don't know what nettles are, a lot of people here are not from this area, in this area beauty and the weather is deceiving

gotcha, that's the most dangerous combination, to beutiful, you don't see the danger.
if I go to my neighbourhood forrest I can wear shorts any further it's long pants and good boots, never flip-flops

We have this everywhere, hard to control but make a excellent barrier, stinging nettles the toxic material is a combination of acid and antigenic protein, when the "needle" penetrates the skin, the tip breaks and the juice is injected very very painful, I can plant a few and this stuff it would take off like wild fire, at night it looks like a regular weed if you can see it until you brush up against it, during the day if you don't know what they are, your in trouble, we get a lot of city folk up here and leave not long after once they encounter this weed

stinging nettles

Yep, we call them horse nettles here, but we take them out, as it really ticks off the horses (and us). Nice idea for a perimeter plant though, outside the fences.

Those barricades are pretty awesome, beat the hell out of sandbags, but I'm guessing you can't just pick these up anywhere. Pretty neat idea. (especially in the sands of the Middle East). I think I'll be stuck with using the bags though. Hence my concrete planter idea.

old barb wire that has been taken down can be used in this manor or several strands suspended inches off the ground about 1 foot apart as is in diagram 2 so that if you trip over one you get cut by 2 or more different strands of wire not just a single scratch take into mind that the efficiency of this depends completely on your ability to camouflage the wire in foliage pot farmers use these methods around hear to protect there crops ive got tangled in a few of these messes of wire and it is even suspended head high in some places hope this is helpful to some one

Intriguing idea (mixing the barbed wire in with foliage). Ouch!

Kind of like tangle foot used in the Civil War . It doesn't have to be barbed wire just 6 or 8 gauge wire or even smaller several inches off the ground supported by short pieces of rebar or bamboo or even pvc pipe . Run 3 lines about 3 ft apart across the spance you want to block this would have been to break up an attack while you are fireing in to them . I would add more short pieces of rebar sticking up out of the ground sharpened in front of the wire this could also be bamboo or pvc sharppened into a long sharp point to impale the marauder as they trip . You don't have to be watching this section at the time and it would still be effective . I would leave a clear section for several feet then set another set of tangle foot . You can direct the attackers into this kill zone by having over grown brush or other defences in other directions and make this look like the best rout . Cut down trees and leave the brush facing outwards and sharpen the limbs then briars and such will grow up through it . This would be a outter defence away from your house where you can still watch it . I would run a braided line from spike to spike on the sharpened stakes in front of the trip wires linking the stakes togeather so you could pick them up and not mis one . This system can also be set up to make a hasty parimiter if you are out in the field too .

Thorns are a good bet it is hard to get through the thicket without making lots of noise and if you let them get old and dried you can set them on fire in a worse case scenario they make good speed bumps for escape through secret underground routs old school is the best school

Wanted to jot down a few anti-marauder ideas, and also provide a place for others to do likewise.

1. Fences, fences, fences. Slows an attacker, and gives you a good time to pick them off with a long gun.

2. Vehicle posts. Anchor them in concrete, and can make it difficult for folks to try and drive onto your property (and/or through your fences)

3. Concrete emplacements (built from cinder blocks, rebar and concrete) to make firing positions (can use as planters prior to SHTF)

4. Bright flashing lights (to impede night vision, and even normal human vision of attacking force).

5. Scorched earth policy (poison select food and water supplies if you have to flee). Come back and clean up the bodies after.

6. Step traps (small pits with a board at the bottom with long nails)

7. Warning alarms (motion detectors).

8. Neighbors (mutual defense agreement and plans).

9. Hiding places (so they can't take EVERYTHING even if they win the engagement).

10. Escape method (in case you are overrun).

What other ideas are out there?

Not to get bloody. However, you can build a dumb hideout and lure a group of bad guys in and detonate the building or compound with at least 30+ bad guys. Or you can gas them unconscious for interrogate or possible hostage purposes.

A bit resource intensive though, eh? (gas, explosives, etc.).
