can definately understand that.
appreciate very much your videos and advice Roninsensei.

remember and old retired Brit major, who was my regular when I worked as a shoemaker, we could sit and chat if it was possible, for long times.
he usually told stories from his active days and said like many here, that hand to hand combat was the most difficult to handle afterwards just for the reason it was so personal.

sometimes I do think abt guys fighting in medival times...all hand to hand, those soldiers must have been a tough breed...first you fight like hell,if you survive, then drink like hell..

time spent watching videos here...useing the knife...it's so bloody personal and close

Agreed. I've always thought knives were far too personal for most social uses... Yet, lately I've been thinking that they have a place, especially when there are is a high potential for collateral damage. There are other times too, of course... When stealth is paramount, or other time, weapon retention, empty gun with no reloads, etc... There are tons of "What ifs", but I feel as preppers, this is something that we should consider. I sold a motorcycle to a guy in Florida who had no option but to use his knife to take down a boar that his dogs had penned. There are myriad reasons to use a knife, I suppose.

A pair and a spare.

Of course some people believe in a paired pair with a spare pair.... It can get crazy fast haha.

Roninsensei,

with my small hands deffinately a two-handed weapon...and if that tool worked for centuries why stop now...

great promo for k-bar and cold steel...but you sure have to know what youre doing...othervise you might just have a spatula and slap your enemy ;)

I'm no stranger with a knock down hand to hand fight If it were a knife fight it may come down to stick em where you can . The most training I had with a knife was more like take cover let the tango walk past you then grab them over their left shoulder if they are carring their weapon at ready you have to secure it pull it aginst them . You have your field knife in your right hand and enter just right of the spine at mid kidney go deep cutting to the right as you go and make your way through the kidney and liver cutting both in half and exit the right side . This person has a unrecoverable wound and will quickly bleed out and the fight is over . This all happens in less than 3 seconds . Rather chilling and is only aplical in certain situations . This can be followed up with once the blade exits the right flank you swing up and enter the right side of the neck about the jugguler and punch through the other side and cut your wat foward exiting the wind pipe . This came from a Vietnam Vet that I have no doubt he has done this several times . Could come in handy if a shoot and scoot ambush is not practical . These moves have to be practiced as one slip and you could find yourself in a gun fight with a knife .

Another important point to make is that with a knife attack, the attacker is only using ONE weapon-the knife while you, the defender, have 2 hands and 2 feet with which to attack or defend. The attacker is only concentrating on making that one contact while you have 4.
Also, the blade length doesn't really matter as a 2" nail will puncture a jugular or carotid artery and death occurs within minutes.
When getting attacked by a knife-wielder, try to attack the closest target i.e. the hand that controls the weapon. Control the weapon, control the fight. Even if the attacker is a superior fighter, speed is the determining factor for a win. It is also good practice, at least once or twice just so you know the real thing, is to get blooded in a sparring match. Blood will cause many people to freeze or get freaked out instead of getting amped on adrenaline. The more of your own blood you see before a real fight will help you overcome any mental inhibitions during the real thing.
Watch the movie "The Hunted" with Tommy Lee and Del Toro for multiple hit knife techniques. Creative visualization is a factor not covered by many instructors yet yields the same results as those who actually practiced.

Knife fighting?

I believe that everything should be simple.

I had an interest in knife fighting a few years ago.

We have no shortage of disabled veterans here in Florida, and I hired a combat veteran marine to teach me about the intricacies of using a ka-bar, which is my preferred blade. He drilled me for hours on how to approach quietly from behind, how to target the femoral arteries, etc..

People seem to want to assume the the far east martial arts techniques are...somehow...superior to USMC hand-to-hand combat training, but they leave out an important point: Marine knife techniques are predicated on the idea that the combatant is weighed down with a pack, rifle, and web gear.

I discovered that trying many of the Eastern techniques with a pack, equipment, rifle, etc. won't work as well and will throw you off balance (although they work very well if you are unencumbered).

A good way to practice is to use fake knives and fake blood against a mannequin, and graduate to a sparring partner. A party supply store that carries costumes for Halloween can be a good source of fake blood.

Practice with a full backpack and heavy clothing. Also, practice with multiple assailants.

If a fight seems imminent, conceal a backup blade in the environment if it can be done without being noticed, so if you're taken captive and searched...the blade can be retrieved later if your captors relax.

Don't follow any rules in an actual knife fight. If you can end the fight by taking a hostage, then do so.

If you are wounded and an artery is spraying, aim the blood at your opponents eyes to create a temporary loss of vision that you should exploit before you pass out.

And so on.

Disabled marines are a great source of information and training if you can hire them.
