Honestly I am the worlds number one technophobe and even I managed Chirp cos its very simple, basically you tell Chirp what frequencies you want and it puts em in the radio, please have a go, failing that I reckon one of your neighbourhood ham radio guys can set em up for you in five minutes flat.
You have to know what the frequencies are and being clueless, well, I don't have a clue how to find out what they are. I have figured out the scan feature on it and it's picked up two frequencies so far this morning - but all they are is static.

Try google or Wikipedia for US CB, US FRS and US 70cm and 2 meter Ham frequencies, if nothing else ask on a local radio forum for the hailing / distress channels for your area on CB, FRS, 70 / 2meter

Hey Clyde, I just put two of the baofeng radios in my shopping cart on amazon, along with an aux antennae and car charger. My question is I typed in police scanner on amazon too and the baofeng popped up. Does it work as a scanner as well? It would be great to only have to buy the one radio.
I have not tried it as a police scanner, but I will know this coming week as my son is interested in doing that with the coast guard.

However, many police agencies have gone digital therefore no way to hear them unless you get some fancy hardware.

That's good to know, I'll ask a couple guys I see at work to see if they use digital here or not. I did see a pair of midland radios at lowes that look the same as the baofeng's. They were 49.95 for the pair, and come with a charger base, rechargeable batteries and a 3 yr warranty. I just dumped the ones from my amazon account, but before I buy the lowes one's I wanted your opinion. These are the midland lxt580. Thanks.

A guy I work with said he had an Iphone that has an app to make it a ham radio with an ems scanner. Have you played with this yet?
