Ive used some newer gen NV monos that was center mounted on our helmets. It was Most amazing peice of equipment I've had on my head. Had to pay out of pocket for new mounts for it since it was to kept slipping off the mounts we were issues.
A simple Thermal handheld mono is all I'd advise.
If you truly need to have a scope for a rifle go with IR. Cheaper thermal scopes past 100yds are useless.
My ole man and brother go out coyote & fox hunting and they have slowly upgraded to better gear. Later this weekend I can post what they own.
Recently I built an Ar for the oldman that he wanted in 6.5 Grendel and that's become his new favorite LR night rifle.

Keep in mind the batteries are expensive. Only go with a scope that does not have an internal only battery pack. Get one that (has a cable that goes from stock sleeve to the scope) . With either option if your not in a resting position with your rifle, you will only be accurate for 30 seconds after fatigue sets in.

If shit hits the fan at the end of the day, it's hard to find special batteries so that is an important thing to keep in mind.

As Dr. Henley said, you can get very nice low light scopes that have great optics . You'd be surprised the actual natural light that is out at night with some premium glass.

Thank you very much.

I looked back at some old photos and talked to some buddies, we had some Mk II ENVG monos but those arnt on the market.

Met up with my dad last night at a friends farm and looked at my brothers and his gear.

Pulsar has some of the best optics I've seen in there setups. I've played with their stuff for a couple of years when I could get my hands on it.

My dad and brother have started at the bottom of cheaper shit and worked their way up.

Pulsars gear has great image clarity and heat detection that we've played with.

My brothers ATN thermals are pretty good but I just personally dont like some of the zoom features with refresh rate.
You get what ya pay for though.

TLDR: Myself and all the hunters I know love Pulsar but ATN has good stuff.

& for the love of god save money and just have thermals that are Black/white. If your looking for more color(RGBIV) holy shit your gunna pay for it, instead use the $$ for a higher quality black/white model.

Good advice and I ended up with a Pulsar IR scope and have a Pulsar thermal handheld monocular on the way. The new Pulsar Digex scope I ended up with (literally one of the first ones imported into the country, brand new model) is very impressive. Looks like a regular scope for the most part, great features, great clarity and resolution and built solid. I’d highly recommend it if anyone is in the market.

I paired it with a quick release LaRue mount and it’s the ideal SHTF set up. I can easily switch it out for my Aimpoint red dot in 2 seconds. The added bonus with this IR scope is that it can be used in daylight as well but I’d rather use a conventional red dot during the day given the choice. But it’s nice to have the option with the IR scope during the day if that’s what happened to be mounted on the rifle at the moment I needed it.

I'm glad I could help @Rlewpolar ! That's a very good setup and you wont be disappointed. Most important thing is that you know your rails are good and solid.

Keep in mind if you swap the scope out you'll have to resight it. With the IR scopes I've used , if you bench sight it, you can do a 25 HD, 50, then a 100yd. My brothers model (it's a bit of the more fancy model) after he shot that baby in at 100, he took it out to 500yds told the rangefinder in it and hit paper first shot and hit two groups at the biggest spread of about 4 inches (shooting off sticks).

He was shooting either a 22.-250 or 270 swift so that fast round would be expected if the scopes on spot.

You chose a decent scope my friend. The option to use the day scope on it's great that way you dont need to swap anything.

Trust me when you get the thermal mono you wont be disappointed.
:)

I compared a PV-14 to a gen 1 for several nights and went with a gen 1+ armasight with weapon mount and 500lum WL/IR torch behind a red dot.

It’s not a door kicking setup, but if I have it and you don’t and I have my $600 Flir scout, you are at a serious disadvantage.

Gen 3 is night and day different but plan on $6000 minimum to set it up with a laser.

This is the one I got years ago, it’s served it’s purpose so far with critters.

I am slowly building up my prep equipment. I have all the weapons and ammo I need. I’m missing body armor though. That’s next.

The night vision thing though is really nagging at me. I don’t hunt and don’t really have any place to shoot at night. And yet....I can’t shake the feeling that this could be one of the most important pieces of gear in a true emergency.

Who has it here? Do you regret investing in it?

Also, assuming I want to get really high quality stuff, would $5k cover it? Spec some set ups for me if you’d be so kind. I’m thinking a PVS-14 monocular, helmet mounted, some type of laser.

I’d love to get into thermal but I’m just not rich enough [emoji12]

I think it is an unnecessary expense ,,unless you are planning on night raids why would you need it

I am not planning to go on night raids but the bad guys might prefer to raid at night. Just think of the wonderful surprise they might get, when you can see them long before they can see you. Also being able to take down game at night is just one more advantage.

My daughter has a chicken coop about 80 yards from my back porch so I mounted the sightmark wraith on a remington suppressed 597 wmr to snipe the pesky coyotes. Not looking to use it for any other purpose unless things get really bad with the crap going on in the world. My hope is that everyone will take a breath and realize that all this rioting crap is not going to end well for most involved.

I've had a set of TNVC Sentinels for a few years. I run them in conjunction with an ATPIAL-C, on a TW Ballistic helmet. I absolutely do not regret the purchase. It's dark 50% of the time, and NV is much more effective than white light.
