THE COLEMAN LANTERN

I picked up 2 old 220J lanterns Friday for $40,,,,I think they were a fair to good deal in good shape I will replace the Generators on both,,,I have spent many a night fishing with one of these old lanterns,,,,,,,

in my opinion they are still the best camp light money can buy

Yep, they are my favorites, I have about 7 and still use them. That's a good buy and great find Ghost!

I plan on rigging a hanger on my boat for one,,,I always liked night fishing,they should draw the fish to the boat plus providing light to see by

I only like the version that puts itself out if its tipped or knocked over.

I like the old storm(sometimes called hurricane lanterns by some) lanterns, had several when I was off grid powered by paraffin/kerosene, there is probably a battery or wind up variety these days I suspect.

Sounds like one of those modern things, I never seen one on a Coleman lantern even on the new Coleman's, modern stuff ain't as good as the old Coleman lanterns.

£8 or £10 on UK ebay although I prefer something wind up these days, paraffin is getting expensive.

While cleaning out my parents house I found a couple old hurricane lanterns, I think the were used on the railroad. And a couple old glass lanterns with the tall chimney's. The glass ones we'll use in the house.

I only have a Coleman gasoline lantern with a silk mantle, was given it from a buddy coming back from Irak. Got a gasoline stove also. Thirty years old now soon. Both working and glad they are gasoline, can't hardly find kerosene in Germany. Even then it costs around $15 a gallon. My petroleum ones will have to do for me if my propane and butane ever die or I can't get resupplied after SHTF. GP

the new Coleman generators if you take them apart have a cardboard sleeve over the spring,,,I am pretty sure the originals did not have that sleeve ,I remove it for better fuel flow some times that sleeve will restrict the flow and prevent the lantern from lighting,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I have read that adding fuel injector cleaner to the fuel will clean the tip of the generator clean,,,I will be giving that a try

add note about the sleeve the originals had a either brass or copper sleeve on them,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,no idea why they would go to cardboard

Planned obsolescence?

Cardboard a lot cheaper than copper or brass. Also as Dr. H said, planned obsolescence.
