Look for a video Perhaps on youtube called "DAY AFTER DISASTER" (History Channel) It goes through the governments protocol and response called "Unlisted" and "National Response Framework" (FEMA)

An HEMP bomb will be treated the same as an ground-burst putting US on DEFCON-1, There are only about two countries besides the US with the capabilities to explode an HEMP 250 miles above the center of the US for an wide HEMP (NEMP) affect, there are also non-nuclear EMP to called NNEMP, a NEMP are more destructive than just detonating a nuclear warhead or an in flight NNEMP as far as an EMP goes, NEMP generally cover the full radio spectrum + or what is called DC to DayLight (DCDL)

Below are two PDF: "National Response Framework" and "Nuclear/Radiological Incident Annex to the Response and Recovery Federal Interagency Operational Plans"

How many of you people have heard of or even already bought an "anti- EMP" blanket to cover your solar/generators/electronics?? At about $ 70.00 a shot, not too expensive...GP

Those blankets are more of a gimmick, they show them blankets covering generators already connected like standby generators, in other words, the generator already have radio leads running to it in way of wiring thus the blanket won't protect the generator. all these so-called anti-emp/faraday devices are in scientific theory and not scientific facts.

Just remember folks that in millions of towns, cities etc that when the Electricity goes off so does your water, sewage and gas as well as most utilities require electric pumps these days. That means for millions the sewage starts to back up within hours, drains overflow, no fresh water comes after your tank runs out, your central heating wont work because (A) the gas is pumped and (B) the burning ignition is electronic. Low laying cities will see drainage pumps stop and flood barriers fail to work. No street light, no elivators, no freezers in the shops, no fire alarms, NO FUEL PUMPS....... Isnt modern technology wonderful ?

One thing I am not convinced about when it comes to generators, they will all be trashed. If it is a "stand-by" generator connected to your system, then yes, can be impacted thru the wires. If your generator has a battery, then yes, the EMP surge can fry the circuits. Will this just be the starting circuits or the charging circuit, I don't know for sure. BUT, a manual start generator that has no battery or any connections to outside power sources, I suspect since there is no energy to amplify may not be impacted by the EMP.

I have a modified metal storage building (like Lowes or Home Depot sale) that I added metal under the plywood flooring to connect all walls together and provide a shield from the ground. I have my manual generator in the building sitting on the plywood and I suspect (or at least hope) that will protect it from damage. If the generator had a battery, I would make sure I keep the battery disconnected.

Just my thoughts based upon no facts whatsoever. Even if this works, it would be good for only as long as my fuel and oil (generators require frequent oil changes) hold out.

Yes ideally a preppers emergency genny should be a HAND or AIR cranked diesel / bio diesel engine** with MECHANICAL fuel pump and MECHANICAL Injector pump. The Alternator / Dynamo should not be connected to anything and be stored within a Faraday Cage. The Batteries should be stored DRY with the acid NOT in the batteries just kept in the acid bottles NEXT to the batteries. No completed circuits should be exposed to the EMP. Lighting units, white goods with motors and compressors should also be wracked or boxed in metal containers. But that of course is in an ideal world.

** or as some folks are now using MINI STEAM ENGINES

The blankets will only work if the wires are disconnected. Any wires of any long length act as an antenna and draw in an EMP. I have seen test where cell phones, laptops, voltage inverters, generators, etc. Without any cables, power cords etc. Disconnected, was not effected by an emp.

I have no doubt that emp’s are a real threat, but there are so many variables to consider. As Mav pointed out, the whole country likely wouldn’t be affected. The strength of the emp or emp’s would make a big difference in the effects too. All I know for sure is I’ve read accounts where the Carrington event emp made telegraph lines catch fire on the poles. I guess my best advice is to include some ways to cook, stay warm and get water, all without electricity to your preps.

Wow, lots of ideas the good thoughts gentlemen, I believe that I have finally found a place to exchange thoughts and plans of prepping. My generators are 1 kw, 3,5 kw, single phase and a 6,5 kw, with 3 phase/400 v. The 2 smaller ones are in a reinforced concrete cellar under the workshop and covered up with metal. Both have no battery and are just with pullcord to start. The big one is also pullstart. All is cool and thought for our regular power outages in Hungary. NOT for SHTF. That will mean for me Stoneage survival. Nothing less. Guns are ok, but too loud when you do not want the world to know THAT you are there and WHERE you are. Slingshot, crossbow, longbow and family of the quiets are maybe better then. I have already a self-made water toilet/septic tank, and an outhouse near the pigpen. My well has an electric connection and a hand pump. The solar with LEDs, batteries and a infrared heater are all in the cellar for stoneage use, not everyday...GP

well that's all the cities and the large urban towns done for, that should reduce the population down to a manageable level.
without electricity and all the trappings of 21st century life we will have to return to a lifestyle comparable to pre industrial levels.
those of us that can, that is.
