30+ homes evacuated as Saddleworth Moor Burns. Army on standby as incident escalates.

More than 30 homes have been evacuated as a huge moorland fire continues to spread in Greater Manchester.

The blaze on Saddleworth Moor has been declared a "major incident" and the Army is on standby to step in.

The fire began on Sunday night, reignited on Monday during the hot weather and then spread throughout Tuesday, fanned by evening winds.

Thirty-four homes in Carrbrook, near Stalybridge, were evacuated but there are no reported injuries.

Should brought the air tankers in early. Australia and New Zealand has the best grass land firefighters in the world, should ask them instead of the Army. The majority of wildland firefighter here in the US are for heavy forested areas and best in the world but for grass land we have called in Australia New Zealand wildland firefighters to help. I'm surprised the UK isn't part of the Interagency apparatus?

No idea there Mav. Maybe because this is, in the grand scheme of things, a small incident and not life threatening. Compared to the size of fires Australia deals with, this is little more than a bonfire in the back garden, but is still a big deal for this country. The problem is that the moorland is on peat bog which, due to the weather conditions has dried out and has now become a massive firebrick. It's no coincidence that people use dried bog peat for fuel. When I lived in Scotland we burned it instead of coal as it was cheaper and burns more efficiently.
There have been more grass fires near me in the peak district. Again, hardly noteworthy compared to what you suffer (acres rather than miles), over here we so rarely have the weather conditions for these fires to start.

the one on Saddleworth Moor is now being treated as arson after reports of people having bonfires in the area.
I can't understand the mentality of setting more fires. If the idiots had to work hard and their time was occupied with trying to make ends meet maybe then.
