Also on the subject of not getting shot....

Typically, you can get second hand bullet proof vests for just under $100, or just over it. Also, tactical helmets. I mean, you don't want to be out tending the garden post SHTF, then get taken out by a shooter. While uncomfortable, I think eventually we'd get used to it, when we had to be outside. I even want to get one and rework it to fit our big dog.

May seem paranoid, but the world post SHTF would be a scary place where paranoia just may save you.

I've been wanting to pick up some body armor. Where are you finding the $100 stuff? E-bay? BTW...just because we're paranoid doesn't mean we may not be getting shot at. ;)

There are actually a few different sites, but yes, E-Bay has some as well. There's actually a few sites that specialize in second-hand vests. Mostly, they get them from law enforcement when they upgrade, etc., and refurbish if needed. I'll have to check for the specific links (not on this computer). It's a hard prep to justify though, as it doesn't have a "NOW" benefit. I did get the wife's OK for one vest though (as a "put it on, grab the shotgun when you hear a noise" thing...). Our big dog also goes with me (can't tell you how easy it is to track the noise source with him).....

Most of the time, such things are just animals at night, so we don't call the cops right away or anything, but we keep in contact with a radio and she'd know when to call if needed (while I investigate, they all arm up, but stay locked in the bedroom...our bedroom doors are a bit more than your average interior door, so they are pretty safe).

if you're not willing/able to spend millions of dollars on such stuff, forget it (for shtf). The best protection is remaining undetected. About the only way to do that is stay underground during daylight hours, for about a year post shtf. Starving women and kids will show up, dead bodies stink, attract bugs, buzzards and crows, dogs, people, spread disease and filth. Burying 3 dead people, even in a shallow grave, typically takes at least half a day and exposes you to the enemy while you do it, lots of noise, calories wasted, etc. To be avoided.

Pretty sure I'd just drive away any armed intruder bodies and dump them a ways away....

Living underground isn't always an option (such as in Florida, hehe)....

But I do agree with the best defense being to not be seen.

Now I want to know what you look like. >.>
a mixture of ZZ TOP and Hagrid from harry potter:p
some people have been known to cross the street to avoid me, and one person even tried to throw themselves through a shop window for the same reason! all without one word from me.

Sounds like you resemble Hodor from Game of Thrones. (who, in person, is covered with tats and piercings, and of course, is very tall). Very nice guy though.

I must confess I have never seen Game of Thrones, but yes I have tatts and I am tall, well 6ft anyway, no piercings though! beard and long hair. my late father used to call me "the wild man of the woods".

about not getting shot,,,,,,,it seems to me the best way to not get shot is keeping a low profile and staying out of sight,,,no one is going to shoot you if you can't be found, and where I am not being found once the SHTF is a real possibility this is pretty rough country around here

yes that pretty much says it all as far as I am concerned too, not so rough country here but its remote some would say isolated with moorland and peat bogs and lots of rivers and high ground.
