I would worry about said gangs assuming that you either A) have a lot of food store in silos/the barn/whatever, or B) set up some sort of forced arrangement whereby you provide food by tending your land and they offer "protection," meaning they won't come try to kill you in your sleep.

If such a gang was too big to tango with, I've certainly considered option B. No such thing as "in our sleep" though, as we'd always use sentries. If everyone in our planned group can make it, would be about 12 of us, so a pretty good number to rotate, even while doing other chores.

Food, water, medical services, mechanical services, and communication services would likely be our biggest trade options. Any gang would be smart to make a deal. (and if they don't, plan C. Poison certain items, bug out to a stash location, wait for it to do its work, then come back and clean up any survivors....trick is to use poison that takes many many hours to work, so more take it).

I've given some thought about fortifying the house. It's too big an area to try to fortify it all. Unless you're building from scratch with stopping a 50cal in mind, there's just not an effective way to do it not. That being said, consider fortifying an area in the house, mayby even two. Setting things up outside make sense too. Gaz talked about putting up concrete planters, which when Dug out make a great camouflaged pillbox. I really like the dual use of this. You might draw attention to yourself if you make foxholes in your front yard! Just another nutty prepper :). Setting up a concrete water storage cistern, or planter, looks pretty reasonable though. I'd love some other creative ideas here!
The point here is your house isn't safe. A 22lr can easily penetrate most siding, insulation and Sheetrock easily. Something like a 308 May be able to pass thru your whole house. Even if you had multiple layers of siding that gave a little protection, the windows are too easy for a moltove cocktail to be thrown thru. I think having an escape route in mind with some hidden supplies somewhere is much more practical than trying to defend a house.

you suggested fortifying an area in the house..maybe 4 rooms.1 in front of the home.1 in the back of the home.and 1 at each end of your home..and have 2 or more in each room..this way, they can take shifts in protecting the home.and have folks upstairs as well..that is if its a 2 story home..

In my opinion you should have a plan to fortify your home and posistions in your yard . But you should make sure that any trouble makers know that if they pose a threat to your folks and ares there will be a price to pay . Thats where the long rifle comes in then there is booby traps and past that its open season . Post TEOTWAWKI and you cant risk making a mistake you will have to be tuff right off the bat .
It was pure accident but I gave a small warning to potential threats the other day not meaning to . I was out in the yard seting up some targets , had my Ruger Black Hawk and Bowie knife belt on , wearing camo and boonie hat and the mail ran I walked out to the mail box ans as I was getting my mail a County truck drives by with a work crew from the County Jail in orange jump suits drove by they looked and you could hear mumbeling . The County will take them out to pick up litter from the road side . Im sure they dont mind getting out for a while , some of the wore ones could take this opertunity to case out future places to burgularize .

i love moments like that...go out to get the mail, and someone that could be a threat later on.see you with a firearm or 2.and hopefully the practice targets you been shooting at..now their thinking.nope,i dont want anything to do with him/her..

I use the full size torso targets and you can see them from the road with the face area and center mass shot out .

i print my own practice targets.in which i staple them to a wooden frame i built for them.or straple them to a tree.then pick the distance and location where i want to shot from.i figure the smaller the target, the better in the long run..even if the actual printed part of the target is'nt hit ever time.im still getting close enough for a good shot in a bad situation.

we are too far out to be considering fortifying the house, maybe put up razor wire post shtf(illegal now) on top of the fences and blocking off paths and road in(one way in same way out again) .

Illegal now, sure, but post SHTF? Can always stock it now to deploy later in case of an emergency.

My favorite defensive ideas that can look innocent now (pre SHTF)....

1) Thorny bushes and plants. These are great along your fences, under your windows, etc.

2) Fences (as high as you can legally have them). Personally, I like chain link because you can see (and shoot) through it, while slowing them up).

3) Decorative Iron Bars on the windows.

4) Security doors that look like normal wooden doors.

5) The concrete pillbox/planter idea.

6) Medicinal/Herb Garden that also has pretty flowering plants. (disguises the purpose)

7) Shed, to hide things like generators, well access, propane tanks, etc.

8) Rain Barrels with planters on top

9) Footfall traps (simple trench dug out, lined with boards that have face-up nails), then covered up with leaves (especially in the fall) or grass

10) Fake thin fiberglass rocks (enemies think it's hard cover....but bullets are going to go right through it. (and you've already designated the range))

That is bloody brilliant. Probably only would work once per pile as you'd tear it up pretty fast, but still.

I'm a big fan of unconventional strategies....you should see me play boardgame strategy games, LOL...

Could always have replacements ready...but yeah, the idea is more for that ONE bad time where there's more than you could handle otherwise. Can you imagine the look on their faces when their buddy gets shot behind a "rock"?

Almost forgot, plant stinging nettle. Grows wild here, we're constantly keeping it in check in the pastures, (hurts like a bitch), but I encourage it to grow along the outer fence line. Granted, good enough clothing will negate it, but any exposed skin, and it really hurts for a bit.

goes to prove..he's more warped then some of us here..LOL

LOL. Should check into some of the sneaky stuff the Allies pulled in WWII. We used the principles of illusion and misdirection to do some pretty amazing things then.

Sun Tzu's art of war teaches us to know where the enemy expects us to be, and be elsewhere.

Excellent book. I'm pretty much in the camp that he's an amalgamation of folks vs. one guy, but a lot of lessons in that book still hold true to even modern warfare.

I heard from 2nd hand that a individual in a neighboring town that has a simi prepper reputation was commenting to some preppers i know that he and his buddies have worked a raiding paty plan into thier prepps using local maps and planning targets and routs to take . Not that they overly concern me but it reminded me of Gaz'S old thread so i looked it up . This kind of stuff should be a part of anyones prepp's . Not the raiding but the defense against such .

Well, over the course of 6 years, I've pretty much made myself all but immune to stinging nettle. I can walk through it barefoot and get nothing more than a tickle.

Only time it really affected me since, is when I went to pick what I thought was a daisy, but was the flowered nettle instead...that more than tickled, because I grabbed it, then surprised, slid my whole gripped hand the entire length of it... Left some nasty little welts.

I would try to confirm this and if it is valid if the SHTF the first thing I would do is hit him first, and I don't mean take what he has,,,,I mean leave him for the BUZZARDS
